BOOK REVIEW – The Mission of God’s people

If you’re reading this you probably believe that we, as God’s people, have been given a mission. You are likely aware of the familiar command of Jesus in Matthew 28 to make disciples of all nations. But have you ever stepped back to look at the big picture of the Bible, to see all that our mission really entails?

In this influential book, Chris Wright challenges us that the Bible presents a much wider and more thorough picture of what our Mission is than we typically think of as western Christians.

A blessing to the nations

The Mission of God’s people presents a clear biblical basis for what it means to be the body of Christ. It looks at what God has outlined as our identity and purpose on earth as a global and local community of believers throughout scripture. Wright reminds us that we are set apart to be blessed, and be a blessing to the nations (Genesis 12) and shows us from the biblical narrative the many things that has meant, and still means for God’s people. Some of the elements Wright explores include:

  • People who walk in God’s way
  • People who know the story they are a part of
  • People who care for creation
  • People who attract others to God
  • People who live and work in the public sphere

Relevant and encouraging

Although this book was written to provide a biblical theology of mission, it is communicated in a way that is warm and conveys the relevance of the theology to our everyday lives as followers of Jesus. As Wright looks at the topic with a wide lens the contents are poignant for all of us, whether we are involved in local or overseas ministry, sending or supporting.

I believe you will finish this book feeling more grounded in the knowledge of God’s people in the Bible, encouraged and inspired to fulfil the mission God has laid out for all His followers.
