ADVENT DEVOTIONAL: The Light of the World

‘The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.’  Isaiah 9:2 (NIV)

Have you ever been in a darkness so black that you can’t even see your hand in front of your face? It can seem overwhelming, but even the smallest light overcomes that darkness. At Christmas we reflect on Jesus coming as the light of the world; the light that shone in the darkness and who completely defeated darkness and evil when He died and was raised to life.

We were all living in darkness, hating the light as we lived a life covered in sin; we were far from God. As believers in Christ, we have been rescued by the light and into the light. We can be sure we will be with the Lord in eternity by believing in God’s Son who came to save us.

Praise God that He is drawing people in the Arab world to His true light. ‘Today is my birthday. I was baptised today! Thank you very much. You are the one who took my hands to this path – to the real light, and with your help, I found salvation and know Jesus as Saviour. God bless you.’ These beautiful words were from Jabyn* who has been contacting one of the responders serving with Arab World Media.

There are still many people in the Arab world living in darkness, striving to achieve salvation, to build up the number of good deeds in their lives that they would outweigh their bad deeds. But only God’s light can banish the darkness. Please pray that they will turn their focus away from their deeds towards the true light of Christ this Christmas.
