EDITORIAL: News you can trust

‘That news channel should change their strapline to ‘never wrong for long’!’

My news editor shared this idea while I worked as a broadcast journalist eleven years ago. Her frustration came from another outlet’s constant obsession to share breaking news – regardless if they then changed the angle of stories once facts emerged to clear up speculation.

In contrast, the Early Church wanted to verify unfolding events. Intrigued by news that God was at among the Gentiles, the Jerusalem church sent a trustworthy person to review the situation first-hand. He confirmed that the Spirit of God was changing people’s lives and that these new believers were genuine followers of Jesus.

‘News of this reached the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch. When he arrived and saw what the grace of God had done, he was glad and encouraged them all to remain true to the Lord with all their hearts. He was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, and a great number of people were brought to the Lord.’ Acts 11:22-24 (NIV)

A reader’s response:

‘I always enjoy reading your magazines, they are very encouraging and inspiring and have such good teaching.’ Janet
