Lord, don’t trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed. Luke 7:6-7
Jesus is described as ‘amazed’ only a few times in Scripture. Luke 7:9 is one of them. In the context of honour, we can see why Jesus found the centurion’s faith so striking.
The warrior of the conquering occupation does not presume upon the presence of the holy Rabbi. Under Rome’s authority, the general can direct a whole army section with a command, yet he believes that a single word from Jesus can bring divine and instant healing to his dying servant.
Effectively, a leader in the most powerful earthly kingdom at the time, reaches out in faith to the Son of the eternal heavenly kingdom. The Messiah is so impressed with this soldier’s humility and confidence that He is prompted to publicly honour the Gentile man in front of a Jewish crowd – and heal his servant.
