YEMEN: Three ways to pray

“Some of our Yemeni friends have left the city for the countryside, or have left the country altogether. Some have lost members of their family; others have seen their homes damaged or destroyed. It is difficult and very expensive for them to obtain basic needs such as water, food and gas.” Christian worker who used to live in Yemen

We’re praying for Yemen

The people of Yemen are in need of our prayers. The ongoing conflict has led to a growing widespread humanitarian situation. Even if other events in the Middle East dominate the news agenda, we do not want this precarious nation to remain overlooked.

Eight out of ten are in need of aid

According to news sources, at least 1,700 people have been killed during fighting in Yemen with almost 4,000 people wounded. Thousands of others are in desperate need of food and medical supplies. In fact, some estimate that as many as 80% of the population are in need of some sort of aid (BBC News).

Our hearts are stirred to raise prayer and awareness for the plight of the Yemeni people. Let’s not forget the suffering population or national believers trapped in the conflict.

“Things are pretty awful in Yemen right now. The conflict is killing many and the lack of food and fighting relating to that is killing others. The local believers remain as ever inspirational in their approach to the support they are giving people. They continue to be strong in their journey. ” Salome*, Christian worker who used to live in Yemen

Three pointers for prayer

The Bible says:

Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commands. Deuteronomy 7:9

1)    SUFFERING: Food, water and fuel supplies are running low, and in some places street fighting has made it impossible to access the shops. Hospitals and schools are also affected. Please pray for the people of Yemen, especially for long-term healing and restoration.

2)   BELIEVERS: There is a very small believing community of Yemenis in various cities and towns in the country. Please pray that during the current crisis, they will experience God’s faithfulness and see Him deliver them, protect them, and answer them. Pray for God to knit these communities together in Christ as they care for one another in tangible ways.

3)    MEDIA: During this time of great upheaval, may many Yemenis turn their minds to spiritual matters, ask deep questions and seek the truth. Our media team plan to film a Yemeni believer sharing their testimony. Another colleague has developed and launched a Bible study app in a Yemeni local dialect. Pray that these media tools will be shared widely and reach many Yemenis who are seeking Jesus for themselves.
